VETERAN Macquarie Group chairman David Clarke has lightened his workload before his return to the investment bank, yesterday quitting several chairman roles including his post at industrial property Goodman Group.Mr Clarke, who has been with Macquarie for almost 36 years, took extended leave from all his board roles last November to have treatment for cancer.Earlier this year there was speculation he might not return to his business roles, but the investment bank recently confirmed he would be back on September 1. Recent tests have shown the cancer is in remission and in a statement yesterday Mr Clarke said he was in excellent health.Mr Clarke said he would retire immediately from the Goodman role he had held for nearly nine years and was stepping down as chairman of wine interest Australian Vintage. While he is said to be determined to help steer Macquarie through tough global markets, it is believed his main aim will be to oversee succession planning for the bank's eight-member board as well as recruiting new directors following several retirements.Acting chairman Kevin McCann remains a contender for the top role. He has overseen the Macquarie board since late last year as the investment bank was buffeted by some of the toughest market conditions it has experienced. He is up for re-election to the board at Macquarie's annual meeting this month.Mr Clarke said yesterday he would continue as chairman of several non-profit foundations.
